Dr. Wil Gafney has been named The Right Rev. Sam B. Hulsey Professor of Hebrew Bible effective June 1, 2021. Dr. Gafney joined the Brite faculty in Fall 2014 as Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible.
Dr. Gafney holds a M.Div. from Howard University School of Divinity in Washington, D.C. and a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from Duke University. She embodies a passion for teaching and a commitment to students in all of Brite’s masters and doctoral programs. Dr. Gafney is the author of Women’s Lectionary for the Whole Church, Year W and Year A volumes (Church Publishing, 2021), Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to the Women of the Torah and of the Throne (Westminster John/Knox Press, 2017), Commentary on Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah (Liturgical Press, 2017), Daughters of Miriam (Fortress Press, 2008) and her work appears in a number of peer-reviewed journal articles or as chapters in books.
The Right Reverend Sam B. Hulsey Chair in Episcopal Studies was established in 2012 in recognition of The Right Reverend Sam B. Hulsey’s long and distinguished career in The Episcopal Church. Rev. Hulsey served as bishop of the Diocese of Northwest Texas from 1980-1997. Prior to his election to the episcopacy, Rev. Hulsey headed parishes in Corsicana, Pampa and Midland, as well as in Nashville, Tennessee. He returned to Fort Worth when he retired in 1997. He served as assisting bishop of our diocese from 2016 until his death in 2020.
