Hood County Christmas for Children volunteers will distribute toys to thousands of children on Wednesday, December 17, 2014. Christmas for Children is one of the charities supported by the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Granbury. It serves the children of Hood County who might not get Christmas gifts otherwise. Children on the list come primarily from those on lunch assistance in the school system, supplemented by applications from Mission Granbury and other local agencies.
It is an extension of the Granbury Angel Tree project. About 3000 cards are put on the Angel Trees in Granbury. Less than 20% of those get “adopted”. Christmas for Children shops for the other 80% in a warehouse of toys and clothes filled by toy drives and toys bought with donated funds.Last year Christmas for Children spent more than $100,000, donated by individuals and businesses in Granbury. Bishop Rayford B. High, Jr., donated $1500 from his discretionary fund this year.
“Last year we supplied 2,850 bags of toys and clothes – and every kid gets a book – 550 bikes, and 77 beds. If a kid asked for a bed on his or her toy list, we called and asked where are they sleeping. If it’s on the floor or a couch, they get a bed. This year looks similar,” Norm Snyder, Good Shepherd member and board member of Christmas for Children, said.
In addition to offering financial support, about a half dozen Good Shepherd members are involved as “shoppers”in the warehouse, as “picker-uppers”, and other jobs. In addition to being on the board of directors, Snyder is part of the speakers bureau. Barb Snyder is a full time volunteer as well.
