Brite Divinity School’s Stalcup School of Theology for the Laity will sponsor a seminar, “The Faithful Struggle to Forgive,” on Saturday, Jan. 19. Led by Brite vice president and dean Joretta Marshall, the presentation is scheduled from 9am to 1:45pm at Acton United Methodist Church, 3433 Fall Creek Highway in Granbury. This seminar will engage participants in wrestling with the call of forgiveness in our lives even as it seeks to unpack the complexity of forgiveness in diverse contexts and situations. The day is designed to help people of faith discern how best to respond to individual, interpersonal, and communal pain and injustice through the work of forgiveness.

Prior to joining the faculty at Brite, Joretta Marshall taught at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Iliff School of Theology, and Eden Seminary, where she was also Academic Dean. Dr. Marshall is the author of Counseling Lesbian Partners and Why Should I Forgive?, is the co-editor of Forgiveness and Abuse: Jewish and Christian Reflections, and The Formation of Pastoral Counselors: Challenges and Opportunities, along with a number of articles in professional and church-related journals. She is a past President of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors. She is ordained as an Elder in the United Methodist Church and holds membership in the Rocky Mountain Conference.

“Be Still and Know: Zen Practice and Christian Faith,” Saturday, Jan, 12 (9am to 1:45pm), led by Valerie Forstman (Director of Admissions, Brite Divinity School, and Zen Teacher in the Sanbo Kyodan tradition), at Northway Christian Church, 7202 W. “Violence, Sacrifice, and Redemption in American Films,” Saturday, Feb, 9 (9am to 1:45pm), led by Russell Dalton (Associate Professor of Christian Education, Brite Divinity School), at Northway Christian Church, 7202 W. Northwest Hwy., Dallas, TX. Registration is $35 and includes a light lunch. (Scholarships available.)
