For a reasonable investment of time and money, you can create a classic icon, learning this time-honored tradition from David Holland, retired Episcopal priest and long-time icon-writer.
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 595 N. McIlhaney, Stephenville, TX 76401, will host a six-evening workshop beginning Thursday, April 10 (the Thursday before Palm Sunday) and ending Tuesday, April 15 (Holy Tuesday). The experience will culminate in a worship service where all the icons created during the workshop will be blessed.
Workshop participants will write the icon known as “Behold the Man,” depicting Christ standing before Pontius Pilate and bearing the purple robe, crown of thorns, and reed scepter that were meant to mock him. Through the window of the icon, the viewer is invited into Christ’s Passion, alongside Jesus as he prepares to take up his cross.
The cost per participant is $339, which includes the six evenings of instruction plus all materials – board, acrylic paints, 23K gold leaf for the halo, and oil-based varnish sealant. Class size is limited. Interested participants who can commit to the workshop are invited to contact St. Luke’s rector the Rev. Curt Norman as soon as possible: curt.norman@edotn.org.
