St. Christopher Episcopal Church is hosting a Quiet Day organized by the Daughters of the King on Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 9 am to 2 pm.
Come spend time together in quiet and prayer.
Topic
Deacon Tracie Middleton from the Diocesan Office will lead an exploration of praying from scripture using the imagination. Here is her description of the day:
There are many ways to approach the Bible. Some forms of Bible study focus on closely studying the words of the text, the historical setting of the time period described, the style of writing, the situation of the writer, etc. These are all examples of analytical forms of study, and I like thinking analytically in most things I do. So, to intentionally stretch myself and do something different, a few years ago, I made a silent retreat at a Jesuit center, where I could try a form of Bible study using a different side of my brain. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius encourage reading the scripture and then, in your imagination, putting yourself into the setting of the story. You imagine what the entire space looks like, what it smells like, what sounds you hear, the movement around you, the expressions on people’s faces as they speak, how they feel. It’s a different way of experiencing the story, almost as though you are living inside of it. I’ll share a little of my experience with this form of imaginative study and prayer, and we’ll try it together.
