Tarrant Churches Together has announced community service sites and the schedule for the Sixth Annual MLK Day of Service from 7:30 am until 2 pm on Monday, January 18, 2016.
For the past several years, Episcopalians from around the diocese have taken part, either individually or as a congregation, in the day of service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2015, Episcopalians were part of the nearly 500 people who worked at sites around the Tarrant County area – weeding community gardens, stocking food pantry shelves, painting apartments to create safe spaces for victims of domestic violence, writing letters to soldiers overseas and more. This year they hope to increase the number of people working at community agencies that “reach out to the elderly, the homeless, at-risk youth, children in need, prisoners re-entering society after serving their sentences, families living below the poverty line, people recovering from alcohol and drug addiction, soldiers serving our country and more.”
What’s new this year is that Tarrant Churches Together also is participating in the first Mayor’s Week of Compassionate Service in Fort Worth, led by Mayor Betsy Price January 16-24.
Tarrant Churches Together is “an inter-church nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting congregations and community groups in order to build unity, bridge divisions and address needs (such as educational inequality, poverty and homelessness) in Tarrant County.”
See the list of participating agencies and register here.
Pre-registration guarantees the service site and project of your choice. Walk-in registration will open at 7:30 a.m. on January 18 but choices of service sites may be limited for walk-ins.
The Day of Service will begin at Baker Chapel A.M.E. Church at 1050 E. Humbolt Street in Fort Worth.
On the 18th, doors will open at 7:30 am for sign-in and walk-in registration. A community worship service will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. followed by work at each volunteer’s selected service site until 12:45 pm. Then everyone will gather for a no-cost lunch and dialogue at 1pm at the Broadway Baptist Church at 305 W. Broadway, Fort Worth.
“This is the sixth year for our Annual TCT MLK Day of Service event, and we are proud of the way it has grown and expanded through the years to serve those in need,” said Melinda Veatch, executive director of Tarrant Churches Together. “Volunteers young and old, from a diverse range of churches, neighborhoods and races all come together each year to give back through this event and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”
