St. Mary’s, Hillsboro, is a faithful supporter of the Hillsboro Food for Families Program. Hillsboro Interfaith Ministries recently recognized the church’s contributions.
The Rev. Sam Houston of Hillsboro Interfaith Ministry presented a plaque to the Rev. Hope Benko and Dr. David Skelton of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in thanks for St Mary’s outstanding support of the annual Hillsboro Food for Families Program. This year a total of 100,000 pounds of food was donated.
“I think St Mary’s gave the largest gift in the county by a church,” said Skelton, who serves on the Food for Families Committee.
Members of the church also assemble Snack Packs for more than 100 children on free lunch programs so they will have food over the weekend. St. Mary’s pitches in one week a month in support of The Church on the Hill who sponsors the program. “We have done this for about 3 years and donate $2000 annually as well,” Skelton said.
In another tradition of helping their neighbors, after Easter Sunday’s service each year, St. Mary’s members take the cross that the children have flowered and bring it to Townhall Estates Nursing Home for the residents to enjoy. This particular tradition started 37 years ago when a member of St. Mary’s lived at the nursing home.
