It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of former Presiding Bishop Edmond L. Browning, perhaps best know for his declaration that there “will be no outcasts” in The Episcopal Church. This message of inclusion became emblematic of his tenure in office as The Episcopal Church continued its exploration of the implications of the Baptismal Covenant to “seek and serve Christ in all persons” and “to respect the dignity of every human being.” Browning was elected in 1985 at the height of the AIDS crisis. He not only continued the church’s involvement in AIDS work begun by Presiding Bishop John Allin, he embraced the AIDS community, patients and caregivers. He served a 12-year term as presiding bishop. The General Convention changed the term of office for the presiding bishop from 12 years to 9 years in 1994.

TO: The Diocese of Hawaiʻi
I have been informed of the death of the Right Reverend Edmond L. Browning, 24th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church and 2nd Bishop of the Diocese of Hawaiʻi. Please remember Bishop Browning in your prayers.
Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to you our brother Edmond, who was reborn by water and the Spirit in Holy Baptism. Grant that his death may recall to us your victory over death, and be an occasion for us to renew our trust in your Father’s love. Give us, we pray, the faith to follow where you have led the way; and where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, to the ages of ages. Amen.
May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Please remember Mrs. Browning (Patti) and the Browning family in your prayers.
Almighty God, Father of mercies and giver of comfort: Deal graciously, we pray, with all who mourn; that, casting all their care on you, they may know the consolation of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Bishop Browning’s family is currently making the needed arrangements and I will share the details as they become available.
Please share this announcement with the Diocese.
Yours faithfully,
