Several Episcopalians responded to the Bishop’s Challenge and took part in the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 16, some as part of the Tarrant Area Community of Churches event and some as part of other efforts.
St. Alban’s, Arlington, had 23 people participating—17 people at the MLK Dream 5k Race raising funds for two underprivileged elementary schools. Six others were at Mission Arlington assisting In various ways.
Five members of the St. Stephen’s, Hurst, Outreach Committee took part in the Bishop’s Challenge. Here’s the report by Becky McKneely:
We started our day early Monday with Trace Middleton, Carla Drew, Sharon Kern, Deb Aliola, and me. Together we worshiped and sang at Baker Chapel AME. It was a wonderful experience to meet with the community and hear some enlightening words of praise. At about 9:15 we broke up into our group assignments for the day.
Bethlehem Community Center was just a few blocks away so we walked and left our car in the Church parking lot. Our assignment was to scrub disinfect tables, chairs, window sills, and scrub baseboards. We also swept three classrooms and cleaned and dried toys and arranged the classrooms. It was a worthwhile project and gave us all a great feeling of accomplishment knowing we were doing something worthwhile for those who have so little. It is a great way to get out and see where your tax dollars are spent and doing much good.
We worked till 1:00 and drove over to Broadway Baptist Church for sandwiches, chips, cookies and soft drinks with a short program. The meal was free and we met up with the other churches who participated in MLK Day. All of us agreed that we felt this to be worth doing again and that we might in some way be able to help during the rest of the year maybe through donations of things needed of just giving of our time. It gave us all a great deal of satisfaction to be helping our brothers and sisters in Christ.
Other Episcopalians spotted were Gayland Pool, retired priest; Gloria and Marvin Long and Andy Babbili from Christ the King; Bill Stanford from St. Christopher, and William Winston and Daniella, Curran and Gavin Judge from Trinity.
