Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues for approximately 40 days before culminating in Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday is on February 10 this year.
Lent traditionally has been a time of retreat, reflection, and repentance, a time to clear away the distractions of the world and to focus on our relationship with God and with one another. People often choose to give something up for Lent. But there are other ways of observing Lent.
The Rt. Rev. J. Scott Mayer, provisional bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth, shares,
“Once a year we Episcopalians, along with many other Christians in different traditions, wear a smudgy cross of ash on our foreheads to remind us of one inescapable fact – we are going to die. In this ancient ritual act, we link ourselves to countless generations who have turned humbly to God for help in absorbing the knowledge of our inevitable death in a way that will shape our living. This liturgy marks the beginning of forty days of sitting with the knowledge of our mortality, knowledge twinned with the astonishing news of our redemption.
“Yes, we move through these solemn weeks weighed down by full knowledge of Good Friday, but also sustained by our anticipation of the unimaginable event that is Easter. If ever we are to proclaim ourselves the Jesus people, this is the season to do so.
“However you choose to observe Lent, all are welcome at Ash Wednesday services and Lenten programs in the congregations of the diocese.”
